The 74HC4051 is an 8-to-1 analog multiplexer/demultiplexer featuring three address select inputs (A0–A2), an active-low enable input (E), eight independent I/O channels (Y0–Y7), and a common I/O terminal (Z). The device contains eight bidirectional analog switches, each with one end connected to an individual I/O channel (Y0–Y7) and the other end connected to the common I/O terminal (Z). When E is low, the switch of the channel selected by A0–A2 is in a low-impedance ON state; when E is high, the A0–A2 settings are ignored and all switches are in a high-impedance OFF state. To change the switch state, the enable input (E) must be used. VDD and VSS are the supply voltages for the digital control inputs (A0–A2 and E), with a (VDD − VSS) range of 3–9V. The analog I/Os (Y0–Y7 and Z) can swing between VDD (maximum) and VEE (minimum), with VDD − VEE not exceeding 9V. When used as a digital multiplexer, VEE and VSS are connected together (typically to ground).
