MP1584EN-LF-Z is a current-mode monolithic step-down switching regulator. It operates over an input voltage range of 4.5 - 40V and delivers 3A continuous output current via an integrated high-side N-channel MOSFET. Under light-load conditions, the MP1584EN-LF-Z operates at reduced frequency to maintain high efficiency and low output voltage ripple. Current-mode control provides excellent load transient response and cycle-by-cycle current limiting. The MP1584EN-LF-Z incorporates input undervoltage lockout, startup current runaway protection, output short-circuit protection, feedback short-circuit protection, and thermal protection to ensure reliable operation. The MP1584EN-LF-Z is available in an 8-pin SOP package, offering a compact solution with minimal external components. The MP1584EN-LF-Z is an asynchronous, current-mode step-down regulator. It regulates input voltages from 3.8V to 40V down to output voltages as low as 0.8V, while delivering load currents up to 3A. The MP1584EN-LF-Z uses current-mode control to regulate the output voltage. The output voltage is sensed at the FB pin via a resistor divider, and the error is amplified by an internal transconductance error amplifier. The output of the internal error amplifier is compared against the internally measured switch current to control the output current limit. The MP1584EN-LF-Z operates in PFM mode under light-load conditions. In PFM mode, the switching frequency is continuously controlled in proportion to the load current — as load current decreases, switching frequency reduces to improve light-load power efficiency by minimizing switching losses; as load current increases, switching frequency rises while minimizing load current and output voltage ripple. The MP1584EN-LF-Z integrates an N-channel MOSFET switch for stepping down the input voltage to a regulated output voltage. Since the high-side MOSFET requires a gate voltage higher than the input voltage, a bootstrap capacitor must be connected between the BST and SW pins to drive the high-side switch gate. When SW is low, the bootstrap capacitor is charged by an internal 3.3V supply. The MP1584EN-LF-Z can regulate a wide range of input voltages to the output voltage. If the input voltage falls below the undervoltage lockout threshold, the regulator enters UVLO protection mode, shutting down the internal logic and functional blocks. The EN pin is a digital control pin used to enable and disable the regulator. Pulling the EN pin high enables the regulator; pulling it low disables it. A 100KΩ resistor can be connected between the EN pin and the VIN pin to enable auto-start. The current limit is determined by the maximum compensation voltage, which is approximately 2.5V. The compensation voltage is also adjusted with output current. When the load current decreases, the compensation voltage drops. When the compensation voltage remains at its maximum for approximately 12480 cycles, overload protection is triggered. During overload protection, the IC enters hiccup mode.
