All PICmicro microcontrollers employ an advanced RISC architecture. The PIC16F627A/628A/648A features enhanced core functions, an 8-level deep hardware stack, and multiple internal and external interrupt sources. The Harvard architecture provides separate instruction and data buses, allowing simultaneous fetching of 14-bit wide instruction words and independent 8-bit wide data. A two-stage instruction pipeline enables all instructions except program branch instructions (which require two cycles) to execute in a single cycle. A total of 35 instructions (reduced instruction set) are available, complemented by a large register file.
