XPD738 is a versatile USB Type-C and Type-A dual-port controller integrating USB Type-C, USB Power Delivery (PD) 2.0/3.0 with PPS, QC3.0+/QC3.0/QC2.0 fast charging protocols, Huawei FCP/SCP/HVSCP fast charging protocols, Samsung AFC fast charging protocol, BC1.2 DCP, and Apple 2.4A charging specification. The integrated Type-C protocol supports automatic wake-up upon Type-C device insertion, intelligent detection of plug orientation (forward/reverse), and seamless connection establishment. The integrated PD protocol supports Biphase Mark Coding (BMC) with a hardware-integrated physical layer and protocol engine, requiring no software involvement in encoding or decoding. When either the Type-C or Type-A port has a device connected, each port can independently deliver fast charging. When both ports are occupied, XPD738 reduces the output voltage to 5V to power both devices. Notably, when an Apple charging cable remains connected to the Type-A port without an Apple device attached, the Type-C port retains full fast charging capability. In charger applications where charging cables are frequently left connected, XPD738 effectively resolves the fast charging challenge for both Type-A and Type-C ports with permanently attached cables. In addition, the Type-A port features a full-charge cutoff current threshold as low as 10mA, supporting low-current charging for smart wearable devices. XPD738 dynamically regulates output voltage through a single Sink/Source current source connected to the feedback pin of an AC-DC or DC-DC converter. Soft-start functionality is implemented during both startup and voltage adjustment to ensure smooth voltage transitions. XPD738 incorporates multiple protection mechanisms to ensure device safety, including dynamic overvoltage/undervoltage/overcurrent protection (protection thresholds scale proportionally with the device's requested operating voltage/current) and startup monitoring (port voltage is verified to be in a safe state before VBUS output is enabled). XPD738 integrates a 10mΩ VBUS power switch and a 10mΩ current sensing resistor, along with built-in dual discharge paths for VPWR and VBUS. This reduces the external component count and enables fast output shutdown with rapid recovery to a safe state upon fault detection. XPD738 is available in a TSSOP16 package with a minimal external component footprint, making USB PD certification testing straightforward.
