The AiP74HC/HCT238 decodes three binary-weighted address inputs (A0, A1, and A2) into eight mutually exclusive outputs (Y0 through Y7). The device features three enable inputs (E1, E2, and E3). All outputs are LOW unless E1 and E2 are LOW and E3 is HIGH. This multiple-enable function allows straightforward parallel expansion to a 1-of-32 (5-to-32 line) decoder using only four AiP74HC/HCT238 ICs and one inverter. By using one active-LOW enable input as a data input and the remaining enable inputs as strobes, the AiP74HC/HCT238 can function as an 8-output demultiplexer. Inputs include clamp diodes, allowing the input interface to be connected to voltages exceeding VCC using current-limiting resistors.
