FLD78L05 is a three-terminal fixed positive voltage regulator providing a 5V fixed output voltage, suitable for a wide range of applications. As an alternative to zener diode and resistor combinations, it typically improves output impedance by two orders of magnitude while reducing quiescent current. These regulators offer onboard local regulation, eliminating distribution problems associated with single-point regulation. The available voltage makes it suitable for logic systems, instrumentation, hi-fi audio, and other solid-state electronic equipment. The device is available in plastic TO-92, SOT89-3, SOT23-3, and SOP8 packages. With adequate heatsinking, the regulator can deliver 100 mA output current. The device incorporates current limiting to restrict peak output current to a safe value. Safe operating area protection for the output transistor limits internal power dissipation. If internal power dissipation exceeds the heatsink's capacity, a thermal shutdown circuit prevents IC overheating.
