The LM2594 voltage regulator is a monolithic integrated circuit well suited for designing simple, easy-to-use step-down switching regulators (buck converters). It is capable of driving 1.5A loads with excellent line and load regulation. An adjustable output version of this device is available. Internal compensation is used to minimize the number of external components, simplifying power supply design. Since the LM2594 converter is a switch-mode power supply, its efficiency is significantly improved compared to popular three-terminal linear regulators, especially at higher input voltages. The LM2594 operates at a switching frequency of 150kHz, allowing the use of smaller filter components compared to lower-frequency switching regulators. The device is available in a standard SOP8 surface-mount package. Additional features include a guaranteed ±4% output voltage tolerance and ±15% oscillator frequency tolerance under specified input voltage and output load conditions. An external shutdown function is provided with a typical standby current of 50μA. Self-protection features include cycle-by-cycle current limiting on the output switch and thermal shutdown protection under fault conditions.
