Overview
The LM78LxxA series three-terminal regulators incorporate internal current limiting and thermal shutdown protection, making them inherently highly reliable. With adequate heat sinking, output current up to 100mA is available. These devices are intended for use as fixed voltage regulators in a wide range of applications, including local or on-board regulation to eliminate noise and solve distribution problems associated with single-point regulation. They can also be used with power-pass elements to form high-current voltage regulators. As a replacement for zener diode/resistor combinations, the LM78LxxA series typically improves output impedance by approximately two orders of magnitude, while offering lower quiescent current and lower noise.
