Overview

This 24-bit I/O expander for two-wire bidirectional bus (I²C) is designed to provide general-purpose remote I/O expansion for most microcontroller families via the I²C interface [Serial Clock (SCL) and Serial Data (SDA)]. The key advantage of this device is its wide VCC range. On both the P-port side and the SDA/SCL side, it operates over a voltage range of 1.65V to 5.5V. This enables the TCA6424A to interface with next-generation microprocessors and microcontrollers on the SDA/SCL side, where supply voltage levels are being reduced to conserve power. Unlike the continuously decreasing supply voltages of microprocessors and microcontrollers, some PCB components (such as LEDs) remain on 5V supplies.

Key features

  • Operating supply voltage range: 1.65V to 5.5V
  • Supports bidirectional voltage level translation and GPIO expansion between the following ports:
  • 1.8V SCL/SDA and 1.8V, 2.5V, 3.3V, or 5V P-port
  • 2.5V SCL/SDA and 1.8V, 2.5V, 3.3V, or 5V P-port
  • 3.3V SCL/SDA and 1.8V, 2.5V, 3.3V, or 5V P-port
  • 5V SCL/SDA and 1.8V, 2.5V, 3.3V, or 5V P-port
  • I²C to parallel port expander
  • Low standby current: 1μA
  • Schmitt-trigger inputs on SCL and SDA for slow input transitions and improved switching noise immunity
  • At 1.8V: Vhys = 0.18V (typical)
  • At 2.5V: Vhys = 0.25V (typical)
  • At 3.3V: Vhys = 0.33V (typical)
  • At 5V: Vhys = 0.5V (typical)
  • 5V-tolerant I/O ports
  • Active-low reset input (RESET)
  • Open-drain active-low interrupt output (INT)
  • 400kHz fast-mode I²C bus
  • Input/output configuration register
  • Polarity inversion register
  • Internal power-on reset
  • Powers up with all channels configured as inputs
  • No glitch on power-up
  • Noise filter on SCL/SDA inputs
  • Latched outputs with maximum high-current drive capability for direct LED driving
  • Latch-up performance exceeds 100mA per JESD78 Class II
  • ESD protection exceeds JESD22 requirements
  • 2000V Human Body Model (A114-A)
  • 200V Machine Model (A115-A)
  • 1000V Charged Device Model (C101)
