The 4538 is a dual retriggerable/resettable monostable multivibrator. Each multivibrator features a low-active trigger/retrigger input (nA), a high-active trigger/retrigger input (nB), an overriding low-active direct reset input n$\overline{CD}$, an output (nQ) and its complementary output (n$\overline{Q}$), and two pins for connecting external timing components CEXT and REXT (nREXT/CEXT and nCEXT, the latter always grounded). Typical pulse width variation over the specified temperature range is ±0.2%. The multivibrator can be triggered by either the rising or falling edge of the input pulse and produces precise output pulses with widths ranging from 1μs to infinity. The duration and accuracy of the output pulse are determined by the external timing components CEXT and REXT. The output pulse width (tw) equals REXT × CEXT. Linear design techniques in LOCMOS (Locally Oxidized CMOS) ensure precise control of the output pulse width. A low level on the n$\overline{CD}$ pin immediately terminates the output pulse. The recommended operating supply voltage range is 3V to 12V (with respect to VSS, typically ground). Unused inputs must be connected to VDD, VSS, or another input.
