The AMS1117 series of adjustable and fixed voltage regulators are designed to provide up to 1A output current and to operate down to 1V input-to-output differential. The dropout voltage of the device is guaranteed maximum 1.3V, decreasing at lower load currents. On-chip trimming adjusts the reference voltage to 1.5%. Current limit is set to minimize the stress under overload conditions on both the regulator and power source circuitry. The AMS1117 devices are pin compatible with other three-terminal SCSI regulators and are offered in the low profile surface mount SOT-223 package, in the 8L SOIC package and in the TO-252 (DPAK) plastic package.

The AMS1117-3.3 is rated for an operating voltage up to 15V DC, with a recommended working range of roughly 4.75V to 12V depending on thermal conditions and load current. As a linear regulator, internal power dissipation follows P = (VIN − 3.3V) × IOUT. At a continuous 800mA load from a 12V input, dissipation exceeds 7W, which can quickly trigger thermal shutdown without substantial PCB copper heatsinking. In practice a regulated 5V (±5%) input rail is preferred to minimise thermal stress, improve efficiency, and maintain long-term junction reliability.
ESP32 and ESP8266 microcontrollers draw rapid current transients during Wi-Fi transmission, commonly 400mA to 500mA peak bursts. When regulating from a 5V supply, the AMS1117-3.3 must dissipate the excess voltage as heat, which can exceed safe junction temperatures on low-cost PCBs with insufficient copper area. In addition, voltage drops from weak USB sources or high-resistance cables can pull VIN below about 4.4V to 4.6V, pushing the regulator into dropout. This lets the 3.3V rail fall below the microcontroller brownout threshold, causing unstable operation, spontaneous resets, or boot failures.
The AMS1117-3.3 feedback loop was originally designed for output capacitors with an effective ESR of roughly 0.3Ω to 3Ω. Modern X5R and X7R ceramic MLCCs often show ESR below 0.01Ω, which can reduce loop damping and may introduce high-frequency oscillation under certain load and layout conditions. Many designs remain stable using 10µF to 22µF MLCCs with good PCB layout and trace impedance. In sensitive applications, some engineers add a small series resistance (about 0.3Ω to 1Ω) or use tantalum/electrolytic capacitors to improve stability margin.
At LCSC the AMS1117-3.3 (C6186) is supplied in the industry-standard SOT-223 surface-mount package on EIA-compliant tape-and-reel for automated SMT assembly. The standard full reel is 2,500 pieces. The minimum order quantity is 5 pieces, in multiples of 5, so prototyping and low-volume engineering builds are well supported. Full-reel procurement is generally preferred for production to maintain feeder consistency during automated pick-and-place.
In the SOT-223 package the exposed thermal tab is internally connected to Pin 2, the 3.3V output (VOUT), not to Ground. The standard pin configuration is Pin 1 = GND, Pin 2 = VOUT, Pin 3 = VIN. PCB designers must connect the thermal copper area only to the 3.3V output net; routing the tab to a ground plane creates a direct short across the regulator output. For load currents above about 500mA, a copper heatsink region of roughly 500mm² to 1000mm² is commonly recommended to lower junction temperature rise.
