Overview
GM8024 is a 60V high-voltage relay driver IC featuring low quiescent power consumption and 60V high-voltage drive capability. The chip integrates an H-bridge power drive circuit whose outputs connect directly to a relay, enabling contact closure and opening under logic input signal control. Under normal operating conditions, no additional external components are required, resulting in a compact footprint, low power consumption, and high reliability. GM8024 is available in SOP-8 and SOT23-6 packages. Compared to conventional relay driver ICs, GM8024 is optimized with a maximum voltage rating increased to 60V — the three high-voltage pins VDD, OUTA, and OUTB each sustain 60V DC — making it suitable for driving relays with higher rated voltages, such as 24V or 48V-rated relays. The maximum drive current reaches 500mA, meeting the drive requirements of most high-voltage relays. Because relay coils have significant parasitic inductance, the coil current cannot change instantaneously. When a relay turns off, if the inductive current is not properly dissipated through special circuit design, severe ringing occurs. This ringing not only disrupts normal relay operation, but the transient high voltage it generates can also damage the relay driver IC or shorten its service life. GM8024 employs a dedicated anti-ringing circuit design to effectively suppress ringing. GM8024 supports both continuous-voltage and pulse-voltage drive modes. In pulse-voltage mode, simply applying voltage pulses according to the function table causes the latching relay to respond accordingly. For example, in industrial control applications, the latching relay can be actuated by supplying the appropriate pulse voltage based on control requirements. The recommended operating voltage is 5–48V. When the supply voltage exceeds 24V or exceeds the relay's rated voltage, a series input resistor R_S is recommended at the output. The rated maximum current of 500mA represents a peak transient limit (e.g., 100ms duration); sustained high current will cause excessive power dissipation beyond the chip's thermal resistance, leading to damage. The recommended typical power dissipation is less than 5W (corresponding to 400mA at 12V). As the operating voltage increases, the drive current should be reduced accordingly. For higher-power applications, the GM8024A in SOP-8 package with lower thermal resistance is recommended.
