COS180 (single-channel) and COS2180 (dual-channel) are voltage-output current-sense amplifiers (also known as shunt monitors) capable of measuring the voltage across a shunt resistor over a common-mode voltage range of -0.3V to +16V, independent of the supply voltage. The low offset voltage of their zero-drift architecture enables current sensing with a full-scale shunt voltage drop as low as 10mV. These devices operate from a single supply of +2.7V to +5.5V, with a typical quiescent current of 50μA, over an operating temperature range of -40°C to +125°C. The COSx180 series is commonly used in overcurrent protection, precision current measurement for system optimization, and closed-loop feedback circuits. The devices feature fully differential inputs for accurate shunt connections and incorporate an internal gain network whose precision is difficult to achieve with external resistors. The series can be configured for both low-side and high-side current sensing. High-side sensing allows detection of short circuits from the positive supply rail to ground and eliminates the need to add resistance in the ground path of the load under test. The input circuitry enables accurate measurement of voltages exceeding the supply voltage V+. For example, the V+ supply may be 5V while the load supply voltage can be as high as +16V. The output voltage range at the OUT pin is limited by the supply pin voltage. The input pins can withstand the full input signal range up to +16V regardless of whether the device is powered. A minimum 0.1µF supply bypass capacitor is required to ensure proper operation.
