Overview
The TP4057 is an 800mA linear lithium battery charger IC featuring trickle/constant current/constant voltage charging. The charge voltage is set to 4.2V, and the charge current is programmable via an external resistor. When the battery voltage reaches the set value and the charge current drops to 1/10 of the programmed value, the TP4057 terminates charging and enters standby mode. When power is removed, the TP4057 automatically enters a low-power standby state. This IC is a linear charger for single-cell Li-Ion or Li-Polymer batteries, with charge current set by an external resistor and a maximum continuous charge current of 800mA. The TP4057 features dual LED indication via CHRG/STDBY pins. When the supply voltage exceeds V, the TP4057 begins charging the battery and pulls the CHRG pin low. When the battery voltage falls below 2.9V, the IC applies trickle charge. When the battery voltage exceeds 2.9V, the IC transitions to constant current mode, with charge current determined by resistor R_PROG. As the battery voltage approaches 4.2V, the IC enters constant voltage mode and the charge current gradually decreases. When the charge current drops to C/10, charging terminates, the CHRG pin goes high-impedance, and the STDBY pin is pulled low. The charge current is set by a resistor connected between the PROG pin and GND, according to the formula: I_BAT = 1200 / R_PROG. When the charge current falls to 1/10 of the programmed value, charging ends and the TP4057 enters standby mode. The TP4057 incorporates undervoltage lockout (UVLO): when the supply voltage falls below the undervoltage threshold, the charger enters shutdown mode. Removing R_PROG during charging also places the TP4057 in shutdown mode. To reduce thermal dissipation in the IC during charging, a 0.4Ω power resistor or a diode with a forward voltage drop of less than 0.5V may be inserted in series between the input supply and VCC, thereby transferring a portion of the power dissipation to the external component.
